  • Notes
    • From Carolyn Borer Mack:

In the fall of 1871 Leopold and Paulina Mack, Jacob and Theresa Mack and Paulina's brother, Phillip and Gertrude Ritger left Wisconsin to homestead in York County, Nebraska. Their exact reason for leaving Wisconsin is unknown but it may have been that Wisconsin was pretty well settled by that time and good farm land was becoming scarce. In any event, these early settlers to Nebraska had a very hard life. They lived in sod houses as trees were scarce and they were quite remote from other civilization. The only town for 30 miles was York which consisted of three businesses at that time. The town of Henderson (which eventually became their hometown) was not established until 1887. Early on there were no established churches or cemeteries. One story tells that whenever a priest came travelling through he always stayed at the Leopold Mack home. They had a dresser in the house that contained the vestments and chalice and things that the priest used when he stopped. All the Catholic neighbors would gather there for Mass, marriages, formal baptisms and to bless any new graves, etc. It is mentioned in the York County Centennial Book that the Mack's and Ritger's were very instrumental in getting the Catholic Church established at York in 1881. It is the only Catholic Church in the county.
Later, Leopold donated an acre of ground to establish a school - District 87 - on his farm.
In the mid 1880's there was a great influx of immigrant Russian Mennonites to York County buying up much land and literally "taking over the county". They were very clannish and did not neighbor with anyone not of their faith. For this reason the Mack's sought out another town of predominanty German Catholics. In 1896 Leopold and Jacob moved "lock, stock and barrel" to Petersburg in Boone County, Nebraska where they lived until their deaths.
