Messages From Friends
Note: I've compiled the following e-mail messages I received from former
Mendhamites in the wake of the attack on America.  I've edited the
messages to exclude some personal info.  Please let me know if you'd
like further edits or if you'd like your message removed.       - Bob

Subject: More messages
I've received a few more messages from Mendham friends and I thought I'd
share them with you. First, a couple of thoughts:
Thanks to Mark Hari for the photo taken near the Randolph/Morris Township
line (I've attached a smaller version to this message). For those of us in
the NY/NJ area the attack has left many scars. Some can see the smoke of
NYC from their home or workplace. Some travel past makeshift tributes all
around the state. Some like me have a train station nearby that has had
cars parked in the lot since 9-11. Some have felt a direct loss of someone
close.
I've received a bunch of email over the past week. I've included many of
them but some needed to be edited before posting - keep in touch. It has
been helpful for me to hear from all of you

Hi, Bob , I'm ok, but trapped in Manhattan and cannot get to NJ as of yet.
I can see the smoke from my office in Midtown it's unbelievable. My
sister-in-law was in the WTC and saw the first plane hit the building next
door. She got out but said it was a war zone.....
Hopefully I'll get home sometime today.
Cannot wait to hug the kids.....

Dear Bob,
I would appreciate any news that you get from other classmates of ours. My
sister-in-law works on the 98th floor of the World Trade Center and
thankfully was late to work today and was on the subway when the planes hit.
I'm sure we'll all know people who are affected by this.

have a few friends that work in the WTC, I haven't heard anything about them

My Mom was on the case as was a neighbor and got them home from school

trying to leave at 3:00 way too much like a movie .... and much closer to
disaster than I ever want to be again.

Good to hear that our classmates are okay, although it is sad to hear that
many of us knew individuals who were affected by this terrible disaster.
Every morning on my way to the office I would go down the hill by the Morris

still rises today.

Great to hear from you. Your name has come up a couple of times in the
recent months and I feel bad for not tracking you down. I hired a guy at
the beginning of the year who is married to a girl from Mendham. Her
married name is Laurie Kirdegaard. I can't remember her maiden name but her
family owns a dance studio in Mendham. Bo remembers her well.
All is well down here. I was in Winnipeg on Sunday and Monday. I flew into
Dulles at 1 in the morning Monday/Tuesday. Who knew that those bastards
were going to fly out of there a few hours later. I could not get a flight
home so I rented a car and drove 635 miles home. No hardship on me as I
guess I inherited the love of the road from my old man. Even if it was a
hardship, nothing even remotely like what people are going through.

Subject: Tragedy

Hi Bob,

Thanks so much for the e-mail. I have been terribly concerned about our
locals and the people we have known. The whole tragedy was and still is
so hard to accept. I was originally scheduled to fly into LaGuardia that
day but thankfully had a schedule conflict. We have an office in downtown
Manhattan but our guys frequently visit the financial district and fortunately
they were all fine (although getting in touch with them was a challenge since
data circuits and phone circuits were down). My brother-in-law works all
around Manhattan and he was in town that day but came out fine and so
did one of his employees who was only two blocks away when the planes
hit. Unfortunately my sister has close ties that are missing and presumed dead.

I am rather jittery but doing my effort to support the economy and thumb
my nose at the fear - Dennis(my husband) & I are flying to Texas tomorrow
and are going to attempt to enjoy a much needed vacation.

I cannot attempt to comprehend what this has done to the thousands that
have lost their loved ones and friends and the volunteers that have worked so
diligently to try to find survivors in such incredibly dismal circumstances.
Our thoughts, prayers, love and support go out to all of those personally
affected along with the hope that we maintain the strength and determination
required to prevent this from occurring again. One thing I can certainly
say is that although I have always flown an American flag at the house,
EVERYONE is flying flags anywhere you could possibly think to tie a flag to!
Pretty cool!

One of my concerns however is for the true Islamic/Muslim followers in
this country. I have 3 in my department and know others and they are
wonderful, generous people who appreciate the opportunity and freedoms
here and condemn the terrorist actions, but I fear for their welfare.

It was wonderful to hear from you - except next time let's hope it is
due to joy & not grief. Give my best to Nancy and anyone else who remembers me.
Hard to believe you are doing the 25th reunion - I still feel like 18
sometimes but my body recognizes the 41 part!

Take care of yourself & hopefully you can fill me in on old Mendhamite
happenings sometime! Keep me on your e-mail list!

Back to packing...
Love to you and your family
