      Harry G. Rettler 76, of West Bend, died on Saturday, March 6, 2004 at his home.
      He was born on Dec. 28, 1927 in the town of Hartford to the late Joseph A. and Appolonia (nee Gundrum) Rettler.

      After his marriage to Priscilla Wolf on June 6, 1951 at SS Peter and Paul Church in Nenno, they farmed in the town of Hartford for a short time prior to coming to West Bend.

      Harry started his career with the Washington County Highway Department on April 13, 1953, retiring on Feb. 25, 1983.

      His 30-year career with the highway department included positions of general laborer, foreman of the blacktop plant, construction supervisor and assistant patrol supervisor.

      Harry’s first love was his family. His second love was his cottage in Vilas County where he an Priscilla spent much of their retirement with family and friends.

      He also enjoyed the companionship of family and friends during his past annual deer hunting (bow and gun) trips to Vilas and Bayfield counties which meant a great deal to him.

      He enjoyed other outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, nut picking and mushroom gathering.

      Harry was a member of the Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association and the North American Fishing Club.

      Survivors include his beloved wife, Priscilla; three children, David (Sandra) and Genevieve (Thomas) Schalles, both of West Bend, and Floyd (Betsy) of Campbellsport; six grandchildren, Dawn (Nicholas) Spartz, Dianna Rettler, Clifton Rettler, Charles Rettler, Lynn (Chad) Ford and Sam Yancey IV; a sister, Dorothy Owen of Hartford; a brother, Joseph P. of Dallas, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Winifred Rettler of West Bend and Virginia Rettler of Sheboygan Falls; Priscilla’s brothers and sisters; other relatives and friends.

      Preceding him in death were three brothers, Albert, Norman and Donald; three brothers-in-law, and three sisters-in-law.

      A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church: West Bend.

      Father Gerald Brittain will be the presider, and burial will be in Holy Angels Cemetery.

      If desired, memorials to Heartland Hospice Services are appreciated.

      The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

      The family would like to express their deepest thanks to the nurses, chaplain and counselors of Heartland Hospice for the care, comfort, love and support given to Harry during his illness.
