      STORY FROM RITGER BOOK
THE RITGER STORE BUILT IN 1893 CORNER OF 5TH AND MAINE STS.
AUGUST RITER AND MARGARETA CAME TO MARATHON CITY WITH SEVERAL OF THEIR OLDER CHILDREN AROUND 1890. IN 1892 THEY, IN COMPANY WITH JOHN SEUBERT AND A __.MUELLER, BUILT THE TWO STORY 48' BY 70' BRICK STORE BUILDING ON THE CORNER OF 5TH AND MAIN STREETS IN MARATHON CITY,Wisconsin.. AFTER A FEW YEARS, MUELLER AND SEUBERT LEFT THE COMPANY, AND THE PLACE BECAME KNOWN AS THE "A. RITGER STORE".
IN JAN 1920 A SON, PHILLIP J. RITGER AND HIS BROTHER IN LAW , PETER BINGEN, BOUGHT THE PLACE AND IT BECAME KNOWN AS THE "RITGER AND BINGEN STORE". MOST OF PHILLIP'S 11 CHILDREN WERE BORN IN THIS BUILDING, ASSISTED BY A MID-WIFE. PHILLIP DIED IN 1928.
IN 1936 THE ENTIRE STORE BUILDING WAS GUTTED BY FIRE , AND LOCAL CARPENTERS SAID IT COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. THIS WAS DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION, AND OFFERED A CHALLENGE TO PHILLIP'S SON IN LAW , ALFRED STRAUB, OF EDGAR.
IN 1937 ALFRED STRAUB AND WIFE, EVELYN RITGER STRAUB, BOUGHT THE PLACE, CLEANED IT OUT, SPENT $800.00 FIXING THE STORE PART, AND OPENED IT AGAIN FOR BUSINESS, KNOWN AS "STRAUB'S STORE". THEY SPECIALIZED IN HARDWARE, HEATING AND FARM MACHINERY. BESIDES LOWERING THE 1ST FLOOR CEILING FROM 14 TO 10 FEET, THEY LOWERED THE SECOND FLOOR CEILING FROM 10 TO 8 FEET, AND MADE THE UPPER PART INTO FOUR APARTMENTS. THEY MADE LIVING QUARTERS FOR THEMSELVES IN THE LOWER SOUTHWEST CORNER. HERE THEY LIVED UNTIL 1947 WHEN THEY COMPLETED A NEW STONE HOUSE ON THE LOT IN BACK OF THE STORE.
IN 1960 THE STRAUBS WENT OUT OF BUSINESS, RENTED OUT TWO APARTMENTS MADE FROM ONE HALF THE FIST FLOOR O THE OLD STORE. NOW IN 1973, THE STRAUBS ARE RETIRED, BUT STILL OWN THE PLACES; AND AL USES THE OTHER HALF O THE FIRST FLOOR AS A HOBBY SHOP. BESIDES HUNTING AND FISHING, HE HAS MANY HOBBIES, OF WHICH COMPILING GENEALOGIES IS ONE.
IN SEPTEMBER 1974, AFTER AL HAD A SLIGHT STROKE AND HIS WIFE EVELYN HAD BECOME SICK WITH CANCER OF THE LUNGS, THE STRAUBS SOLD THE RITGER STORE BUILDING TO A SPECULATOR, AND BY 1978 IT HAS CHANGED OWNERS AN ADDITIONAL TWO TIMES. EVELYN PASSED AWAY IN DECEMBER OF 1975. AL STILL LIVES ON THE LOT IN BACK OF THE STORE BLDG. WHER THE FIRST CREAMERY IN MARATHON County HAD BEEN,.
THE ONLY FAMILY IN MARATHON TO CARRY ON THE "RITGER" NAME IS ADOLPH. WHILE THE MARIE RITGER KNAUG AND LORETTA RITGER BLUME FAMILIES ALSO THRIVE NEAR THE VILLAGE OF MARATHON. KATHERINE RITGER MENZNER WITH THEIR SON DONALD MENZENER ALSO LIVE IN MARATHON.

Baptism Sponsors: Joan and Margaret Ritger. This Baptism is recorded in both the St. Lawrence and St. Anthony Records with slight differences in spellings.

Built the first brick building in Marathon, Wisconsin, USA. First Mayor of Marathon, Wisconsin, USA. Started first creamery.
      ------------------------------------------------
August Ritger was born in Washington County, Wisconsin on November 27, 1857, a son of Philip and Catherine Ritger. After finishing the required course in the public school in Washington County, August was in business in Nebraska, then returned to Washington County and subsequently came to Marathon County and became one of the early residents of Marathon City.
He had a part in some of the earliest business developing here, erected the first brick building in the village and in 1892 started the first creamery in Marathon County, being its sole proprietor. As the business of the village developed and the population increased, it was Mr. Ritger's enterprise and foresight that brought about the organization of the State Bank of Marathon City, of which he was elected first vice president, succeeding to the presidency of that institution in 1910.
Mayor Ritger served his party loyally and for thirteen years was chairman of the Democratic County Committee. He was first elected mayor of the village in 1895, and served in 1899, 1903, 1904 and 1912. Without doubt much of the prosperity of Marathon City may be attributed to the wise measures brought about during the various administrations of Mayor Ritger. For twenty-three years he owned and operated his general store there, carrying hardware, machinery, dry goods and groceries.
In Washington County, WI, Mayor Ritger was married to Miss Maggie Seubert. They raised thirteen children: Mayor Ritger was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and a charter member of the local body.

      Ritger, Hon. A. (27 November 1857 - 19??)

HON. A. RITGER, mayor of the village of Marathon City, where he has been a general merchant for twenty-three years, occupies a very high place in public esteem, enjoying the confidence of his fellow citizens both in business life and in public office. He was born in Washington County, Wis., November 27, 1857, and is a son of Philip and Catherine Ritger, both of whom died in Washington county.

For one year after the termination of his school days, A. Ritger engaged in business in Nebraska, then returned to Washington county and subsequently came to Marathon county and became one of the early residents of Marathon City and one of its most useful, enterprising and public spirited men. He had a part in some of the earliest business developing here, erected the first brick building in the village and in 1892 started the first creamery in Marathon County, locating it here and has continued as its sole proprietor. As the business of the village developed and the population increased, it was Mr. Ritger's enterprise and foresight that brought about the organization of the State Bank of Marathon City, of which he was elected first vice president, succeeding to the presidency of this institution in 1910. The other officials are: Michael Duerstine, vice president, and George Ritger, cashier. A lifelong Democrat, Mayor Ritger has served his party loyally and for thirteen years was chairman of the Democratic County Committee. He was first elected mayor of the village in 1895, and has served in 1899, 1903, 1904, his last election being in 1912. Without doubt much of the prosperity which has attended the growth of Marathon City may be attributed to the wise measures brought about during the various administrations of Mayor Ritger. For twenty-three years he has conducted his general store here, carrying hardware, machinery, dry goods and groceries.

In Washington county, Wis., Mayor Ritger was married to Miss Maggie Seubert, and they have had the following children: Lena, Philip, Maggie, George, Peter, John, August, Mary, Joseph, Katie, Anna, Etta and Wienant, of whom Peter, John and Mary are all deceased. Mayor Ritger and family belong to St. Mary's Catholic Church. He is a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, a charter member of the local body.
