Hoffmannsgutes in Oberndorf.

Veltin Aulenbach

86 Sr. Kathleen Bergs, SDS

April 28, 1912 - November 27, 2003

Marie Margaret Bergs, daughter of Anton and Catherine (Schueller) Bergs, was born April 28, 1912 in Edgar, Marathon County, Wisconsin, USA, diocese of La Crosse. She was one of 10 children, one of them being Sister Lawrence, also a Salvatorian. She entered the Congregation September 1,1930 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, USA and was invested August 12, 1931, receiving the name of Sister Kathleen. She made First Vows August 13, 1932 and Final Vows August 13, 1938, both at St. Mary's Convent, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, USA.

Sister Kathleen graduated from Divine Savior Convent High School in 1933 and from Wausau Technical Institute in 1935 where she studied to be a medical record librarian. She also studied hospital administration, becoming certified with the College of Hospital Administrators August 23,1959. Sister Kathleen completed the requirements of the Wisconsin Nursing Home Administrator Examining Board and became officially licensed June 10, 1972.

Her active service to the Salvatorian Mission covered a span of 55 years. During that time she served as medical records librarian, office supervisor and hospital administrator at St. Mary's Hospital: Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin, USA (1935-1965). She also served as provincial consultor, secretary and treasurer (1965-1969), and medical records librarian, health consultant/administrative liaison at St. Mary's Nursing Home, Milwaukee (1969-1990). She retired in 1990.

In the course of the many years Sister Kathleen was in health care she also had the opportunity to serve beyond our institutions. During her years in Wausau she was at various times:

o Vice President: Wisconsin Hospital Association
o Secretary: Wisconsin Hospital Association
o Board Member: Wisconsin Conference of Catholic Hospitals
o President (2 terms): Wisconsin Conference of Catholic Hospitals
o Member of Comprehensive Mental Health Planning Committee of WCCH

In 1968, S. Kathleen, who was serving as Provincial Secretary at the time, was asked to go to Rome to help with the preparations for the special General Chapter of 1968 and the beatification of Mother Mary. Later she wrote: "An unforgettable event in my life was the opportunity to be present at the beatification of Blessed Mary of the Apostles in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in 1968." S. Kathleen had a great love for the Congregation and was always willing to serve where and however she was needed. Her gracious hospitality and welcoming spirit were outstanding. Sisters who worked "under" her in her many positions of leadership praised her fairness and openness to all members of a department. "She had a listening heart" said one Sister.

It wasn't until 1994 that S. Kathleen went into full retirement at Salvatorian Heights, Milwaukee. She suffered much from severe arthritis.

Because of declining health, S. Kathleen entered St. Mary's Nursing Home in 2000 and moved to St. Anne's with the other Sisters in January of 2002. She was able to live in the Salvatorian Sisters Residence until September 2003 when her condition warranted more specialized care. She then transferred to the nursing home on the St. Anne's Salvatorian Campus. On Thanksgiving Day, November 27th in the evening, S. Kathleen very suddenly, but peacefully died while the nurse was caring for her. She was 91 years old and professed for 70 years.

May she find joy and the reward for her faithful service in Heaven.

Sister Kathleen is survived by her sisters, Sister Lawrence SDS and Germaine Ritger and brothers, Herbert (Mary Alice) Bergs, Sylvester (Loretta) Bergs and Lawrence (Gladys) Bergs, a brother-in-law, Herbert Fochs and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Catherine Bergs, brothers Alex, Aloysius and Anthony Bergs and sister Dolores Fochs.
